Tuesday: Stigma-Free UC webinar — The Neglected Addict: Understanding Stigma, Students and Recovery
Please join us on Tuesday, July 17 at 11 a.m. for a discussion on the impact of stigma on college and university students who are in recovery from substance abuse — a group that is too often invisible. Ann Cheney, assistant professor in the Department of Social Medicine, Population and Public Health at the UC Riverside School of Medicine, will present research into how stigma shapes the identities of these students and plays out in their use of behavioral health services. Cheney will also share self-care strategies for the staff who provide treatment for students in recovery.
A medical anthropologist whose work places the voice of the community at the center of scientific inquiry, Cheney’s research addresses health disparities in underserved populations, including ethnic and racial minorities, immigrants, veterans and students. Cheney is currently leading a Photovoice project in which students with substance use histories articulate their recovery experiences and support needs through photography.
All UC faculty, staff and students are invited to attend this webinar, sponsored by the Systemwide WellBeing Initiative, on Tuesday, July 17, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. To view the webinar online, go to UCOP.zoom.us/j/5109879443. To join by phone, dial 408-638-0968; Meeting ID: 510 987 9443.
