Sugar skulls, ofrenda and film screening: Celebrate Dia de los Muertos at OP

During the week of Oct. 29, UCOP’s Latino Staff Association (LaSA) will celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by hosting several events that all UCOP staff members are invited to attend.

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. During this time of year, families and friends gather to remember and pray for loved ones who have passed in order to support their spiritual journey.

LaSA’s 2018 Dia de los Muertos events are as follows:

Sugar skull decorating with the UCOP Craft Club

LaSA will once again join forces with the Craft Club to create a space for staff to make their very own sugar skulls (calaveras).

  • Date: Tuesday, Oct. 30
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Location: Franklin 9204

If you will be attending, please RSVP via the link on LaSA’s event webpage so that we will have enough supplies for everyone.

“Coco” film screening

The film “Coco” follows aspiring musician Miguel, who is confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music and enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. Popcorn, pan dulce and horchata will be served. There will also be a drawing for a chance to win a gift basket filled with delicious items!

  • Date: Thursday, Nov. 1
  • Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Location: Franklin Lobby 1

Dia de los Muertos ofrenda

LaSA and the OGC Diversity Committee will set up a traditional Dia de los Muertos ofrenda in the Franklin lobby for Oakland staff. The Staff Connection Committee in partnership with LaSA will display an ofrenda in the UCPath Center lobby, on the third floor by the elevators. You are invited to bring a picture or memento of a deceased friend, relative or pet to add to the ofrenda. If you bring a photo, please consider adding a note explaining who the person was. Please label the back of the photo with your name so we know to whom it belongs.

Oakland ofrenda:

  • Dates: Oct. 29 – Nov. 2
  • Location: Franklin Lobby

UCPath ofrenda:

  • Dates: Oct. 30 – Nov. 1
  • Location: UCPath Center lobby, third floor by the elevators

At UCPath Center only: On Thursday, Nov. 1, there will be light refreshments at the ofrenda table from 2–4 p.m. and staff can paint their faces in the sugar skull style in honor of their lost loved ones. Note: A limited amount of sugar skull face tattoos will be available, so if you are interested in the face-painting, please contact Cierra Covarrubias at 951-787-5195 starting Oct. 29.
