Last chance: Bring the voice of UC employees to the Regents

If you’ve been considering applying to become the next staff advisor to the UC Regents, remember that applications are due April 1, 2019 at 5 p.m. All interested staff are encouraged to apply for this invaluable opportunity to provide a staff perspective on issues faced by the board.

Who are the staff advisors? What do they do?

Staff advisors are two staff members or non-Senate academic employees who bring an employee voice and perspective to UC Board of Regents deliberations and decision-makers at the Office of the President. They participate during open sessions and in designated committees of the board.

The current staff advisors are Sherry Main, assistant vice chancellor of Public Affairs at UC Irvine, and Kate Klimow, chief administrative officer and director of External Relations at UC Irvine Applied Innovation.

How long is a staff advisor term?

Each staff advisor serves for two years. The terms are staggered, with one new staff advisor selected each year. The person elected to the position currently held by Main will serve from July 2019 to June 2021. Klimow’s term continues through June 2020.

Why should I consider applying to be a staff advisor?

In a recent story, departing staff advisor Main said, “While this position involves long hours, it is an incredible opportunity for you to serve and to grow. You get to support the people who write our paychecks. Their work matters, and it’s your job to help them do it better.”

Who may apply for the staff advisor role?

You are eligible to serve in this role if you:

  • Are a staff or non-Senate academic employee. The seat is open to both non-represented and represented employees.
  • Have at least five years of UC service

How can I learn more about becoming a staff advisor?

You can learn more about the program and how to apply by April 1 on the staff advisor website.
