Following every federal census, California must re-establish the boundaries of its congressional, state senate, state assembly, and state board of equalization districts to reflect new population data and shifting populations.  

Prior to 2010, state legislators drew district lines; however, in 2008, the Voters FIRST Act gave this power to California citizens. The California Citizens Redistricting Commission was created to ensure that new and fair political boundaries could be drawn without special interests, politics or political influence.   

Eligible Californians may apply to be part of the 2020 Citizens’ Redistricting Commission by submitting an application to the California State Auditor’s Office during the initial 60-day application period, from June 10 to August 9, 2019. 

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission is a chance to help create fair and transparent district boundaries that serve the best interests and reflect the diversity of the people of California.
