Women We Admire: Kum-Kum Bhavnani
On Tuesday, May 14, the President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (PACSW) is pleased to welcome Kum-Kum Bhavnani as part of its Women We Admire Series. Bhavnani is vice chair–elect of the UC Systemwide Academic Senate as well as its chair-elect for the 2019-2020 academic year. She is a distinguished professor at UC Santa Barbara, where she teaches in the sociology and global studies departments, focusing on topics related to gender, globalization and cultural studies.
Bhavnani is an author of numerous books and articles, as well as a documentary filmmaker. Her 2006 film, “The Shape of Water” — which was narrated by Oscar-winning actor and activist Susan Sarandon — tells the stories of women throughout the developing world who are pioneering social justice. Watch the trailer. Her newest film, “We are Galapagos,” premiered at the 2018 Santa Barbara Film Festival.
“My commitment to the University of California is as strong as my commitment to social justice, including diversity and freedom of speech,” says Bhavnani. “These commitments have permitted me to work hard on issues that affect staff, students and faculty.”
