Take Charge: Boost your career

Are you an administrative, support or entry-level staff member who’s ready to take your career to the next level? Check out Take Charge: Developing a Career Strategy. This five-month program, sponsored by UCOP’s Learning & Development team, will give you the tools you need to thrive in the workplace for years to come.

“Take Charge helped give me the tools I needed to focus my ambition,” says Administrative Assistant Mark Turner, a previous Take Charge participant. “I also came away with a fresh perspective on my professional skillsets that have accumulated over time.”

A three-pronged approach to career success

The success to the Take Charge program comes from its winning combination of classroom learning, independent study and peer mentoring:

1. Six in-person classes. Get real-world advice for boosting your career, including:

    • Singing your praises—self-advocacy
    • Managing up and negotiation skills
    • Career planning and networking
    • Effective resume writing
    • Interviewing tips and strategies

2. Weekly self-guided assignments. Reflect upon the advice you receive in each session and strategize for how you will apply it to your career.

3. Five peer mentoring sessions. Program consultants will help you learn to articulate your career goals and work towards achieving them.

Led by professional leadership and career development coaches

Take Charge is led by Vanessa George, MBA, and Amy Levine, Ph.D. George is associate director of graduate career management at the University of San Francisco’s School of Management and a certified executive career coach. Levine, who previously served as executive director of the UC San Francisco Center for Gender Equity, is a certified leadership coach.

George and Levine’s insight is a great resource for exploring career options at UCOP and throughout the UC system.

“I would recommend the Take Charge program to anyone who might be considering career opportunities within the UC system, but feeling overwhelmed by their size, scope and possibilities,” says Turner. “This program helps ground participants and equips them with the tools needed to formulate short- and long-term goals.”

The program’s intended outcomes are for attendees to:

  • Increase their ability to better manage career development
  • Expand their professional network
  • Experience more job satisfaction
  • Improve their relationship with their manager

And, says Turner, “most importantly Take Charge empowers individuals to truly see their worth and value as employees and contributing members to the greater good.”

How to participate in Take Charge

Interested employees must complete and submit a program application by Friday, August 2. Applications must be supported and signed by each applicant’s supervisor. A selection committee will review the applicants and select the participants. Sessions begin August 29, 2019, and run through January 14, 2020.
