Embrace the new Zoom and join Zoom chat

Zoom isn’t just a great meeting tool — it’s also a great way to instantly message your colleagues and create discussion channels or groups. More than 900 UCOP staff are already using Zoom Chat, sending more than 160,000 messages a week! Join the conversation and start using Zoom Chat today.

UCOP employees have also been having a lot of Zoom meetings lately — more than 10,000 a week. To make online meetings and Zoom chat as seamless as possible, IT Client Services is rolling out centrally managed support for Zoom Windows updates so users will have an up-to-date, consistent and secure Zoom experience.

Contact colleagues via Zoom Chat

To get started, open your Zoom desktop client and select the Chat icon at the top.

Here are some great things to try with Zoom Chat:

  • Send a direct message to almost anyone within UCOP.
  • Add non-UCOP Zoom users outside to your chat.
  • Create private or public channels for group chat.
  • Start a Zoom meeting with anyone directly from the Zoom chat window.

Zoom version 5.0: Make sure you’re current

As of May 30, 2020, all users will need Zoom version 5.0 or later to join meetings. Released in April, version 5.0 introduced a more secure data encryption method. Thanks to central management of Zoom updates, most Windows PCs have already been updated; however, the few that haven’t — and all Mac users — will need to make manual updates. If you did not update by May 30, Zoom will prompt you before you can join a meeting.

To check whether your computer needs to be updated:

  • Open the Zoom desktop client.
  • Click on your initials (or picture) at the top of the client window.
  • Go to Help < About Zoom to view your version.

To update Zoom:

  • Open the Zoom desktop client.
  • Click on your initials (or picture) at the top of the client window.
  • Go to Check for Updates.
  • If an update appears, select Update, then Install.
