New security banner for outside emails
Beginning Sunday, Dec. 19, IT client services will add a banner to all email messages originating from all organizations and individuals outside the University of California. This is a security feature to help alert you to possible spam or phishing emails.
The light yellow banner will contain the words, “CAUTION: This email originated from outside the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe.” It will appear as follows:
Please note that this banner does not mean that an email is definitively problematic. Many legitimate emails will have this banner, including those from systems or vendors we use, such as Oracle, because they do not originate from within a UC location. The banner is simply a reminder for you to consider whether the source is trustworthy before you open or respond to the email. It will not affect or change messages you receive from outside UC.
As you know, malicious email is sent to us to compromise our systems or steal personal or institutional information. For this reason, it is important that as an organization and as individuals we do everything we can to safeguard our systems and information. Thank you for doing your part.
