Technology

Box Advanced
April 19, 1 – 2 p.m.
Want to know how to securely store sensitive data in Box? Interested in how to get data into Box via email or URL? In this advanced Box class, we’ll cover a wide range of topics, including setting up alerts to monitor folders and using Box groups to manage department collaborations. 

Excel Intermediate/Advanced
April 26 and May 4, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Microsoft Excel has hundreds of features and functions, which means that selecting the correct feature at the right time and using it in the correct way can be tricky to say the least. In this intensive training session, you’ll learn core Excel features that you can use right away, along with advanced capabilities that you can build on as your knowledge increases. Get ready to rapidly build your skill-sets around the featured tools in this class! You’ll learn:

  • How to get what you need from your data with minimal effort through SumIFs, AveregeIFs and CountIFs
  • How to look good and stay organized by using tables with structured referencing
  • The easiest, best method to get unexpected and expected answers from your giant, messy data set using pivot tables

Participants must attend both sessions to receive course credit.

PowerPoint Techniques 
April 27, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Learn powerful techniques that can help you save significant time, better manipulate and format presentations, convey information in a compelling way and collaborate with others more effectively. We’ll cover dozens of navigation and formatting tips and shortcuts, including master slides. We’ll share data presentation tips, including creating tables, charts and diagrams within PowerPoint and importing assets from other applications. We’ll also show how SmartArt can add visual elements that make your presentation more memorable, as well as other presentation best practices to increase impact.

Leadership and people management

People Leaders Forum: Difficult Conversations with Employees
April 14, 1 – 2 p.m.
People Leaders Forums are a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. This month’s session will give managers an opportunity for learning and practicing key strategies for having difficult conversations with employees. It will feature Ombudsperson Callale Concon in conversation with Annie Prozan and Oscar Lara.

Leading Across Difference: Understanding Self, Understanding Leadership
April 19 and May 3, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This interactive training experience will focus on disrupting racial bias and anti-blackness, increasing awareness of institutional, structural and systemic inequity through race, and applying this information to increase leadership skills at all levels. Read more about this class.

New employees

STEP for New Employees: Define Criteria
April 6, 11 a.m.  – 12 p.m.
In this instructor-led training on the Staff Talent Evaluation Process (STEP), we will expand on the materials presented in the STEP Fundamentals for Employees eCourse by going into detail on the first stage of STEP, called Define Criteria. You will practice writing goals, review strategies for choosing focus competencies and discuss personal change management.

New Employee Orientation — Oakland, in-person
April 11, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Starting a new job or at new UC location can be daunting. This orientation session is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to UCOP. Topics include UC and its history, UCOP overview, employee tools and resources, safety and compliance.

UCOP Safety: Basic Awareness
April 20, 11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Melissa Collins, program manager for security, risk and resilience, will facilitate this 30-minute live virtual class that will provide basic safety tips to help employees feel informed, alert and safe as they travel to and from the workplace. Extra time will be allotted for questions and feedback. Melissa joined UCOP after serving 20 years with the UC San Diego Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant, and is a safety expert.
