Join APISA in recognizing AANAPISI Week
The UCOP Asian Pacific Islander Staff Association (APISA) invites colleagues to join them in recognizing Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) during AANAPISI Week — from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1, 2023. This year’s celebrations mark the 15th anniversary of Congress’ establishment of the AANAPISI program to improve the availability and quality of postsecondary education programs to support low-income, first-generation Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students.
Institutions are defined as AANAPISI under the Higher Education Act as colleges or universities with an undergraduate enrollment that is at least 10 percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander. Additionally, at least half of the institutions’ degree-seeking students must be low-income.
As U.S. President Joe Biden wrote in his Sept. 22, 2023, AANAPISI Week Proclamation:
“These vital institutions empower students to earn degrees and reach their full potential while providing culturally responsive services and culturally sustaining programs that include tutoring, advising, career development and counseling, and more. With the Supreme Court’s recent decision to effectively end affirmative action in college admissions, the work to make higher education accessible to all is as essential as ever. We need to keep open the doors of opportunities and ensure that the promise of America is big enough for everyone to succeed.”
