First 2024 EDI Town Hall kicks off organization-wide goals

On Friday, Feb. 9, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Department held its first EDI Town Hall of 2024. Members of the UCOP EDI and Anti-Racism Advisory Group led the event, which was focused on the four UCOP-wide EDI goals in which all divisions, managers, supervisors and staff will participate. These goals are the first under the Unified EDI and Anti-Racism Framework, which was introduced during the July 2023 UCOP EDI and Anti-Racism Town Hall.

The initial four goals span key areas that aim to set a strong foundation for EDI and anti-racism efforts throughout UCOP. They are structured to increase leadership engagement and accountability in EDI work, equip managers and supervisors to make data-informed decisions to advance EDI efforts, and provide tools and resources for all staff to continuously learn about and practice anti-racist behaviors.

Meeting highlights

During the town hall, advisory group members shared:

  • Specific feedback from staff that informed the goals, including the importance of shared accountability, addressing UCOP’s structure, and consistent and continuous communication regarding progress measurement.
  • Expectations for a reflection and learning series for the President’s Advisory Group — aka PAG, the highest level of UCOP leadership — and continued support by UCOP senior leaders as employee resource group executive sponsors.
  • The creation of an organization-wide EDI Council, which will align EDI goals and strategies across divisions; provide departmental consultations; and enable cross-divisional learning by providing a reporting structure through which each division will share their progress and findings with the PAG, to allow for organizational benchmarking.
  • An EDI Dashboard that will provide demographic data on the UCOP workforce, including trends around hiring, career mobility and retention.
  • An anti-racism learning and reflection tool that all managers and supervisors will have the opportunity to be trained on. This tool will help to open lines of communication on EDI-related topics between managers and their employees. (EDI knowledge will not be “scored” as part of an employee’s performance evaluation.)
