UC researchers share three fixes for AI’s bias problem

The use of artificial intelligence is growing every day. Unfortunately, this powerful technology can reinforce and amplify people’s existing biases and perpetuate longstanding inequities. The reason: AI is only as accurate as the information it receives and this information often amplifies the beliefs of the people who created it.

“We have to do a better job of curating more representative data sets, because we know there are downstream implications if we don’t,” says says Zubair Shafiq, professor of computer science at UC Davis.

As AI gains momentum, UC researchers are identifying discrimination in the algorithms that are shaping our society, devising solutions, and helping build a future where computers do us less harm and more good.
