PACSW welcomes Lady Idos to speak on championing DEI in uncertain times

Lady Idos, MPA

Lady Idos, MPA, is the chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

The President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (PACSW) returns on June 6 with the next event in its popular Women We Admire speaker series. All UCOP colleagues are invited to join a presentation by Lady Idos, MPA. Lady is the chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and a national leader in ensuring accountability in efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA).

It can be easy to take DEI efforts for granted, particularly since they are not under attack in California. Nationally, however, the future of DEI programs and policies is uncertain. About a third of states have pending legislation to limit DEI in state and local government organizations, including K-12 schools and higher education, and there are national efforts like the Project 2025 playbook, which provide guidance on how DEI efforts could be eliminated during a presidential transition to a GOP administration.

Lady will discuss efforts to protect DEIA at the federal government and at Berkeley Lab, increasing attacks on DEI throughout the country, and the need for all of us to practice continued DEI resilience.

About Lady Idos

Lady Idos, M.P.A. (pronouns: she/they) serves as the chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory managed by the University of California.

In this role, Lady has spearheaded several initiatives that align DEI principles with the lab’s research mission, stewardship values and organizational culture. She developed and implemented Berkeley Lab’s inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability (IDEA) strategic plan; launched its first employee resource groups; and introduced pioneering Workplace Gender Identity and Transition Guidelines within the national laboratory and UC system.

Lady recently completed a two-year detail assignment at the Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters under the Biden-Harris Administration. Within the DOE’s Office of Energy Justice and Equity, Lady led three divisions focused on strategic planning, learning and organizational development and workforce engagement. Reporting to a Senate-confirmed appointee, she provided leadership on DEIA strategy for the federal DOE workforce and oversaw the implementation of six federal executive orders focused on DEIA, including gender equity and LGBTQI+ equality, and White House Initiatives on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders; Black Americans; and Hispanic Americans. Her contributions were recognized with the 2022 U.S. Secretary of Energy Achievement Award for her role in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Standup Team.

Lady holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco, a bachelor’s degree in sociology from UC Santa Cruz, and a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in education at the NYU Steinhardt School.
