Meet VAUS

Led by Mark Romo, chair, and Martha Naber, vice chair, VAUS’s mission is to serve its communities, including veteran employees and allies at UC, all UCOP locations, and each other through collaboration and influence.

VAUS activities include:

• Hosting and participating in activities and events to share UC’s mission with veterans, military service organizations and the academic community
• Participating in outreach projects and local community events
• Creating opportunities for employees to bond through personal and family armed services affiliations and overall admiration for the Armed Services
• Helping veterans and service members learn about the various supportive services available to them

Additionally, the VAUS team is developing plans to help UCOP veterans leverage the talents and skillsets they learned during their service within the UC community.

“We created Veterans Among US because we believe that veterans and service members deserve a seat at the table to share our unique perspectives and needs. We aim to elevate our visibility, find commonalities between our members and all employees, and have conversations about issues that are important to veterans and service people,” says Mark.

Participate in the VAUS Selfless Service photo project

Veterans Among US is sponsoring a Selfless Service photo project to recognize veterans and service members, past and present, at UCOP and those connected to UCOP employees. To participate:

1. Upload a high-resolution photo to this Box folder labeled with your last name.
2. Send an email to link@ucop.edu with your name, UCOP title and a caption for the photo.

The submission deadline is July 1, 2024. Photos will be shared in a future issue of Link and displayed on digital screens in Oakland (pending editorial approval).

Why “selfless service”? It is part of the seven Army values of the acronym LDRSHIP, which is the Army’s foundation of service: to people, the country and to each other:

“Put the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service is larger than just one person. In serving your country, you are doing your duty loyally without thought of recognition or gain. The basic building block of selfless service is the commitment of each team member to go a little further, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort.”
