State Governmental Relations team gives back in North Sacramento
On Nov. 19, 2024, the UCOP State Governmental Relations (SGR) team came together to complete a day of service with the Sierra Service Project (SSP).
SSP’s mission is to build strong connections and resilience among communities by equipping volunteers with home repair skills and partnering with local residents to complete community-based projects. Making home repairs accessible to historically underserved communities helps residents thrive.
One of SSP’s current projects involves working with local volunteers, including SGR colleagues, to install paver art in North Sacramento alleyways. Ten Sacramento-based artists were commissioned to design the pavers — aka “Heavy Puzzles,” which are custom-cut small pavers that become six-foot art medallions when pieced together.
The alleys in North Sacramento are typically dirt, and in the rainy winters, they can become muddy and unsafe for residents. In addition to alleviating this issue and enabling more pedestrian access, the medallions bring beauty and a sense of community to the neighborhoods they reach.
