Combating antisemitism: A new website demonstrates UC’s reforms and programs
Following October 7, 2023, conflict spread at universities across the country, including at UC, testing the limits of our traditional approach to de-escalation and public safety. After reflecting on where we fell short and how we can do better, UC leaders have instituted comprehensive reforms and programs to promote safety and combat all forms of harassment and discrimination, including antisemitism, on our campuses.
A newly launched webpage provides an overview of these efforts, highlighting UC’s strengthened policies, training initiatives, incident reporting protocols, educational programs, partnership with Hillel, and campus-specific actions. For example, UC launched a systemwide civil rights office and implemented the systemwide Anti-Discrimination Policy. We also conducted extensive trainings to inform the whole UC community about policies and procedures related to campus safety and expressive activities.
As UC President Michael V. Drake, M.D. and the 10 UC chancellors stated in a message to the community:
“There is no place for hate, bigotry, or intimidation at the University of California. Period. Antisemitism is antithetical to our values and our campus codes of conduct and is unacceptable under our principles of community. It will not be tolerated.”
