UC ANR–led initiative named semifinalist in National Science Foundation competition
A cross-state effort to modernize U.S. agriculture and strengthen domestic food security has advanced to the next phase of the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines competition.
The FutureFood Engine, led by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources and backed by more than 50 partners across California and Nevada, has been selected as one of 29 semifinalists from nearly 300 initial applicants for a virtual site visit, the second-to-last step in NSF’s rigorous merit review process.
The FutureFood Engine was conceived in response to growing pressure on the U.S. food system. It brings together a broad network of universities, growers, tribal governments, startups, economic development groups and community organizations to build a regional innovation ecosystem centered on food resilience.
