An update on digital accessibility compliance
Across the UC system — including at UCOP — we have made strong progress on ensuring digital accessibility across all platforms. Efforts have improved practices, built capacity and expanded access to digital content and services.
This work is already making a meaningful difference for students, faculty, staff and the public, and maintaining this momentum will be key to meeting upcoming requirements and supporting UC’s mission of equitable access and inclusion.
Here’s a quick update on where we are at.
What’s happening
The deadline for ADA Title II digital accessibility compliance has been moved to April 26, 2027. The U.S. Department of Justice has extended the deadline by one year.
Key points to keep in mind
- The Section 504 compliance deadline has not changed and remains May 11, 2026. It carries the same requirements and applies to UC as a federally funded institution.
- UC policy remains in effect. The UC Information Technology Accessibility Policy (ITAP) required conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA by April 24, 2026.
What this means for UC
- Locations should continue following current plans to meet 2026 requirements.
- The Title II extension offers some flexibility in setting priorities, but does not reduce the work or expectations.
- Focus should remain on high-impact areas, with continued attention to governance, resources, and accountability.
