Thursday: Join President Milliken for a conversation with UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk

President Milliken will welcome UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk for the next President’s Leadership Conversation on Thursday, May 21.
This Thursday, May 21, at 11:30 a.m. (PT), tune in via Zoom to join President Milliken for his next President’s Leadership Conversation featuring UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk.
If you haven’t yet attended a President’s Leadership Conversation, these events provide a special opportunity for UCOP staff to hear directly from higher-ed leaders about their diverse pathways to leadership and the topics most on their minds today, and to see the big picture of how our work at UCOP resonates throughout the university.
Mark your calendar and join us: Let’s see which division will have the highest turnout!
What to expect
Chancellor Frenk will share insights from his fascinating background as a public-health leader. As Mexico’s federal secretary of health, he led major national health care reform initiatives, including introducing comprehensive universal coverage for more than 55 million previously uninsured people. He was the founding director-general of the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico — one of the leading institutions of its kind in the developing world — and served as executive director in charge of evidence and information for policy at the World Health Organization.
Within higher-ed, Chancellor Frenk was the first Latino president of the University of Miami and the first Latino dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
In addition to his prolific academic publications — which include nearly 200 academic journal articles, books, and chapters that have been cited more than 40,000 times — he has written five novels for young people explaining the functions of the human body, the first of which has been in print uninterruptedly since 1978.
Chancellor Frenk will talk about what it’s like to work at UCLA — including navigating natural disasters like the LA fires, his priorities for the campus and how emerging technology is impacting the college experience. And, we’ll hear about his passion for opera!
Don’t miss this fascinating conversation with one of our university’s leading minds.
How to attend
Advance registration is required, and this event is limited to UCOP staff.
On Wednesday, May 13, all UCOP staff received an Outlook invitation from UCOP Announcements with a Zoom registration link. You must complete the registration form to receive the meeting info. More about the President’s Leadership Conversations series
The President’s Leadership Conversations are an opportunity for our community to come together and hear from leaders powering positive change across UC, as well as others who will inspire us through their unique perspectives on business, science, the arts, and more. Previous events have provided inspirational insights into several UC chancellors’ diverse personal and professional journeys — last month, we learned how one UC staff member changed the course of UC Merced Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz’s life.
