On Tuesday, July 14, the University of California Board of Regents appointed Jordan Roiland as the 2027–28 student regent. Roiland will serve from July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 as student regent-designate. He will gain voting privileges when his one-year term as student regent begins on July 1, 2027. He succeeds current student regent Miguel Craven.

Roiland earned his bachelor’s degree with a dual major in applied mathematics and statistics and biochemistry from New York’s Stony Brook University. He earned his Master of Science in health and medical sciences from UC Berkeley in 2025. He is currently working towards his M.D. as part of the UC Berkeley–UCSF Joint Medical Program.

With his appointment, Roiland becomes the first M.D. student and only the third UC San Francisco student to serve as student regent in the 52-year history of the position.

“I’m proud to have wholly come up through public education. My time at UC Berkeley and UCSF has shown me how strong these institutions are, thanks to our impressive faculty, amazing staff and incredible students,” said Roiland. “I am humbled by the honor of representing the student perspective while working with the Board of Regents to support a UC that upholds our institutional vision and values. It is exciting to be the first medical student to serve in this role, and I can’t think of a more critical moment to have this perspective brought to the board.”
