On Thursday, Sept. 17, President Milliken shared updates from the recent UC Board of Regents meeting on his Substack, The Gold and the Blue, Volume 22:

We covered a lot of ground at this week’s UC Regents meeting, including on how we measure our performance and prepare for what lies ahead. As a public university, UC has a responsibility to serve the state and demonstrate our impact. Our annual Accountability Report provides a data-rich assessment of this work, from expanding opportunity and social mobility to advancing research and innovation. It also gives the Board, university leaders, policymakers, and the public a clear view of UC’s performance — and where we have more work to do. Some positive data from the report to shout from the rooftops:

• Most UC graduates more than double their earnings between 2 and 10 years after graduation
• 68% of UC undergrads graduate debt-free (more than 20 percentage points higher than a decade ago)
• UC produces an average of four inventions every day

We also had lively discussions about the work of our AI Steering Committee and what college and career readiness should mean for students entering and graduating from UC. AI is already changing how students learn before college, and the workplaces they will enter are also evolving. We must continue to consider how we equip students to succeed at UC and continue learning and leading lives of meaning and impact.

And finally, some sartorial news: Student Regent Miguel Craven and Student Regent-designate Jordan Roiland and I have matching ties. Coordinating in gold and blue bodes well for a year of collaboration ahead.
