Communication and collaboration

Creating an Inclusive Culture: Intergenerational Collaborative Work Teams
Sept. 19, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In today’s workforce, five generations work alongside each other. Each generation offers values, assets and viewpoints that enhance organizations and enrich culture. While this array of experiences and talent benefits organizations, it can also be challenging. During this workshop, we’ll define and understand cultures within teams; identify the strengths of each generation and the value they provide to the team dynamic; learn about silent team “killers”; and develop methods to shape a diverse, and inclusive team grounded in equity.

Collaborating Productively in Hybrid Meetings
 Sept. 24, 1 – 3 p.m. (Hybrid class)
Learn techniques to help you lead hybrid meetings with the preparation and processes to run meetings smoothly, increase participation and engagement, and include all voices — whether they’re joining in-person or virtually. Oakland employees are encouraged to attend the in-person session.

Mindfulness and healthy habits

Mindfulness at UCOP
Sept. 6, 9 – 10 a.m.
Less stress, better awareness and focus, and improved health are some of the benefits shown in research studies on mindfulness. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to reduce stress and increase your effectiveness at work through simple mindfulness techniques.

Cohort learning opportunity: Mindfulness Meditation to Reduce Stress, Anxiety and Burnout at Work
Fridays, Sept. 27 – Nov. 8, 8:30 – 9:15 a.m.
Over seven weeks, an intimate group of colleagues will meet virtually to learn mindfulness techniques and practices, participate in guided meditations and engage in lively discussions. Learn more about the cohort or apply.

Personal safety

UCOP Safety: Basic Awareness
Sept. 11, 2 – 3 p.m. | Oct. 10, 9 – 10 a.m. | Dec. 3, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Melissa Collins, program manager for security, risk and resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class, providing basic safety tips to help you feel informed, alert and safe as you travel to and from the workplace. Extra time is allotted for questions and feedback.

UCOP Safety: Active Attacker Training
Sept. 17, 1 – 2 p.m. | Oct. 15, 10 – 11a.m.
This live virtual class will teach you skills and strategies to respond if you’re exposed to an active-attacker situation. We’ll review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of similar encounters.

Project management and technology

Project Management I
Sept. 5, Sept. 11 and Sept. 18, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Led by highly rated trainer Raj Kapur, this beginner-level course covers the basics of initiating, creating and managing projects of all sizes. Get ready to help your team collaborate more effectively and boost your career!

Excel Advanced Data Analysis
Sept. 12 & Sept. 19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Microsoft Excel includes several tools for analyzing large amounts of data. By making the most of these tools, you can change how you do business. This course will teach you how to mine the answers hidden in your data to unlock the analysis power of Excel.

Box Fundamentals
Sept. 12, 11 a.m. 12 p.m.
This course provides an overview of Box, a cloud-based service that provides secure file storage and file sharing at UCOP. We’ll cover the basics of using Box, collaborating with colleagues and people outside UCOP, file comments, folder permissions, shared links and more. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions.

Excel Intermediate/Advanced
Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Microsoft Excel has hundreds of features and functions. In this two-session course, we’ll cover core Excel features and featured tools, including SumIFs, AveregeIFs and CountIFs; tables with structured referencing; and Pivot Tables.

New employees

New Employee Orientation
Sept. 10, 9:00 a.m. – 12 p.m. (On-site; Oakland)
Starting a new job or at new UC location can be daunting. This orientation session is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to UCOP. Topics include UC and its history, UCOP overview, employee tools and resources, safety and compliance.

People managers

STEP Training — GROWing Your Check-In Conversations for Managers
Sept. 4, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a popular coaching framework used worldwide for problem-solving, goal-setting and performance improvement. This interactive session provides managers with an opportunity to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. Learn to promote a growth and development stance in your coaching and feedback conversations.

People Leader Forum: Designated Home Location Procedures and Policies
Sept. 20, 1 – 2 p.m.
People Leader Forums are a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their team. Our September session will focus on the Interim UCOP Employee Headquarters Location Procedure, as it applies to UC Policy G-28 Travel Regulations. Learn more about how this procedure works, including exceptional approval for certain positions to receive a temporary designated headquarters location.

STEP Training — GROW Plus: Accountability Conversations for Managers
Sept. 13 or Sept. 26, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This is the second part of the required live training series on manager and employee performance conversations. This training answers the question: “What do I do when my coaching is not improving performance?” In this virtual, live, and highly interactive workshop, we will cover: providing productive critical feedback, managing emotions, creating efficient documentation and holding effective accountability conversations. Managers will also practice role-playing accountability conversations using the UCOP GROW Plus framework.
