New UCOP community spaces debuting in Oakland

The UCOP Operations team is pleased to announce new openings and significant refreshes of community spaces in our Broadway and Franklin Oakland offices. These comfortable areas provide space for staff to brainstorm and connect with colleagues or take a quiet moment for themselves. The project team stretched a tight budget with creativity, patience and some foraging.

Explore our new spaces

On Sept. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., we will hold open houses at the following locations:

  • Located on the 5th Floor of the Broadway building, the Broadway Community Center is a welcoming, flexible space that supports connection, collaboration and wellness. It features some donated artifacts and décor from various UC campuses, as well as a book-lending program that will begin in October.
  • Now renamed the Franklin Community Kitchen, the Franklin 5th Floor Breakroom has been updated to support group and solo lunches. A new UCOP Little Free Library allows staff to donate or borrow books for personal use.
  • The Franklin (5th floor) and Broadway (8th floor) Reflection Rooms provide a quiet, inclusive space for mindfulness, meditation, prayer or restorative breaks.

“I’m so excited for the opening of the new community spaces,” said UCOP Operations Executive Director Thera Kalmijn. “We began designing and procuring items for these spaces last year, and it is great to see our early vision come alive. I am grateful for the UCOP Operations Building and Administrative Service Center, Business Resource Center and immediate office teams for their hard work and dedication. This was definitely a labor of love.”
