5 pm deadline for Leadership Development applications

The deadline for applications and nominations for the Leadership Development Program, OP’s new program designed to develop individual leadership ability from within and cultivate a diverse pool of future leaders, is 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 12.
Designed for strong performers who already manage people or projects, applicants must have been in their current positions for at least one year and have the potential for taking on additional responsibility. (One of several new initiatives to develop UCOP employees, it follows the implementation of the new Mentorship Program launched last month.)
The rigorous, nine-month program requires a commitment of about 1 to 2 days per month, to be spent in leadership classes, case studies, coaching and 360-degree assessments, as well as additional time outside of class on project work and meetings.
Class meetings will occur once monthly, with the first session scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, and subsequent monthly meeting dates yet to be announced.
The cornerstone of the program is that, in addition to professional facilitators, top OP leaders—including President Mark Yudof—will be involved, sharing their vision and experience applying a broad range of leadership skills in an OP-specific setting.
The curriculum includes courses in leadership, working in a public institution, management, financial operations, decision making and the budget process, the university culture, collaboration with campuses, managing change, communicating effectively and group projects.
Applicants may be nominated by their manager or other nominator or may nominate themselves. Because of the heavy time commitment required, participants must also have the support of their supervisor and department.
Final participants will be selected based on current performance and their potential for growth in the organization as well as in their own careers. A cross-section of OP staff will make the final selections from among the applicant pool for 15 slots.
