David Rusting joins UCOP as chief information security officer

Please welcome David Rusting, who has joined UCOP as chief information security officer (CISO).
Rusting comes to UCOP from UC San Francisco, where he served as CISO for more than four years and was instrumental in transforming information security services for the clinical, research, education and administrative enterprise. At UCSF he guided the information security program and managed numerous initiatives, including implementation of data loss prevention, mobile device encryption standards and a monthly cyber-security awareness campaign.
At UCOP, Rusting will develop and implement the ITS information security strategy, focusing on mitigating risk and implementing best practices. He will work with UCOP departments to develop data protection strategies, coordinate response to information security incidents and provide security awareness training. Systemwide, he will collaborate with campus colleagues to promote best practices, resource sharing and information security initiatives.
He was recently elected chair-elect of the systemwide IT Policy and Security group (ITPS), which promotes collaboration in information security across the UC system.
Prior to UCSF, Rusting was director and chief security architect at Unisys, a senior principal at Diamond Technology Partners (now part of PwC) and led IT teams at the University of Michigan Medical Center and Business and Finance Division. He holds a bachelor’s from UC Berkeley and an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
