New video series uses animation, illustration to bring UC research to life

Showcasing the passion and commitment of UC’s researchers, a new series of videos launched by UCOP’s communications department uses inventive visual storytelling techniques to raise awareness of UC’s contributions to the state and the world.
Called Fig. 1, the series is meant to widen the audience that is exposed to UC researchers and their work. The videos focus on research topics – such as film preservation, cancer cells, mountain biking and global warming – that are both groundbreaking and relevant to modern life. The series supports UC’s research mission across each of the campuses, labs and medical centers and demonstrates the collective power of the University California system.
Videos that are part of Fig. 1 – the name refers to the label given to the first illustration in a research paper – make innovative use of animation, color and illustration to break down complicated research into a story that anyone can understand.
Why does UCLA use 35 millimeter safety film to preserve its huge movie archive? Why is a cancer cell squishier than a healthy one? Why did hikers and bikers go to war in Marin County?
These are the kinds of questions that Fig. 1 videos answer in an entertaining and informative way.
