National Book Month: Patrick Marks visits UCOP this Friday

October is National Book Month, and UCOP’s Education Partnerships invites you to celebrate the importance of books to UC’s public educational mission with a talk by independent bookseller Patrick Marks this Friday, Oct. 24, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1.
Marks — who was manager and head buyer during some of the 20 years he spent working at Berkeley’s famous Cody’s Books — will discuss several books he has selected from UC Berkeley’s Free Speech–themed 2014 summer reading list. He is now owner and operator of The Green Arcade bookstore in San Francisco, which he founded in 2008.
The Berkeley list is compiled annually for incoming freshmen from recommendations by campus faculty, staff and students. This year’s list focuses on books about the Free Speech movement, which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Marks’s picks include:
- Freedom’s Orator: Mario Savio and the Radical Legacy of the 1960s, Robert Cohen
- The Essential Mario Savio: Speeches and Writings That Changed America, Robert Cohen, editor
- Subversives: The FBI’s War on Student Radicals, and Reagan’s Rise to Power, Seth Rosenfeld
- Intimate Politics: How I Grew Up Red, Fought for Free Speech, and Became a Feminist Rebel, Bettina Aptheker
- Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Gloria Anzaldúa
Education Partnerships will distribute copies of some of these books in a free raffle. Arrive at 11:45 a.m. for a light lunch, and the talk will begin at noon.
