Sign up for the Jan. 21 UC Oakland Partnership day of service
Spend three hours sorting food products and packing food boxes at the Alameda County Community Food Bank on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. This is the first formal volunteer opportunity sponsored by the UC Oakland Partnership, which is looking for 30 volunteers for this event.
The Food Bank was founded in 1985 and provides food for 240 nonprofit agencies in Alameda County. Last year, it distributed 25 million meals made up mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables.
If you’d like to participate, please send an email to UCOakland@ucop.edu. A member of the UC Oakland Partnership work group will be in touch with details about scheduling and transportation. Participation will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis.
As part of the UC Oakland Partnership, President Janet Napolitano has approved a community service program for Office of the President staff that will include release time so employees can participate in sponsored events that support Oakland’s government, non-profit, business, philanthropic and religious communities.
Employees can use a maximum of four hours a month in release time to engage in UC Oakland Partnership–sponsored community projects, subject to supervisor approval. More community service opportunities will follow later this year.
The UC Oakland Partnership was designed to increase UCOP staff engagement with the Oakland community. Initiative projects include an annual scholarship fund and participation in community events like the City of Oakland’s Thanksgiving Dinner and the UCOP holiday gift drive, both of which serve families in need.
If you’d like to participate in a community service program event, be sure to check with your supervisor in advance. Supervisors and managers will approve the release time based on operational needs of their departments and with secondary approval of the UC Oakland Partnership work group.
The aim of the community program is to develop a cadre of volunteers at OP and to establish a regular, year-round set of engagement opportunities that match OP staff with community needs and programs that rely on volunteers for success.
I love this idea and know I’ll be signing up!
