Call for volunteers and coat donations this Thanksgiving

Join your UCOP colleagues and get into the season of giving by volunteering at the City of Oakland’s 24th annual Thanksgiving Dinner for low-income families, seniors and the homeless.

There are still some volunteer spots available to help serve food at the event, which is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24 at the Oakland Marriott Hotel at the corner of Broadway and 11th Street.

You can also help by donating warm coats, which will be passed out to dinner guests.

To volunteer:

Up to 60 UCOP staff will help set tables and serve food at the event. There are still some volunteer spots that are open. Three volunteer shifts are available: 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 11:45 a.m. -1:45 p.m., or 1:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.

Participants will be asked to meet at the Franklin Building security desk 20 minutes prior to a shift.

To volunteer, contact Michael Kusiak at Michael.Kusiak@ucop.edu by the end of the day on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

This community volunteer opportunity is sponsored by the UC Oakland Partnership. President Napolitano has approved up to four hours of paid release time per month for employees to volunteer in UC Oakland Partnership-sponsored events that support Oakland’s government, nonprofit, business, philanthropic and religious communities. Before you sign up, please check with your supervisor first for approval.

To donate warm coats:

Donate gently used or new coats by Friday, Nov. 20 by placing them in the large marked containers in the Franklin building lobby by the security desk. The coats will be given to guests at the Thanksgiving Dinner. All sizes are needed.

A few volunteers are needed to help Kusiak organize the coat drive and also to escort our OP volunteer groups to the Thanksgiving Dinner. Please contact Kusiak if you can help.

Last year, OP staff collectively donated more than 100 coats, and more than 50 OP volunteers helped serve food at the event.
