Plant a seed by volunteering at an Oakland school or farm this October
Can you spare a few hours to read to students or help at an urban farm? Either way you’ll be planting a seed for a fruitful future.
Continuing its mission to connect UCOP staff with our local community, the OP Professional Community (OPPC) affinity group has organized two great volunteer events in Oakland for the month of October. Information about the events is given below.
President Napolitano has approved up to four hours per month for each UCOP employee to participate in volunteer work, provided the employee receives prior approval from their supervisor. (Since these two events take place in the same calendar month, you will only be able to volunteer at one of them.)
Bookmark alert! To help publicize its activities, OPPC has recently launched a website that includes a calendar of upcoming events as well as general information about the affinity group.
Hispanic Heritage Month Read-Aloud at ASCEND K-8 School
In a city as diverse as Oakland, students need opportunities to see themselves – and all of their classmates – in the books they read.
OPPC is partnering with the Oakland Public Education Fund to give exposure to Latino/a writers and illustrators through various reading-based activities, including volunteer read-alouds in ASCEND K-8 classrooms. The day will begin with students showcasing their skills and expertise in an assembly. Come celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with fellow UCOP volunteers and ASCEND!
Date: Thursday, Oct. 6
Time: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Location: ASCEND School @ 3709 E. 12th St., Oakland
If you are interested in this two-hour volunteer opportunity, please contact OPPC Chair Kay Francesca Coelho.
October Harvest Festival preparation at City Slicker Farms
In a highly industrial area like West Oakland, community members need opportunities to access fresh, healthy, and sustainable food for themselves and their families; to learn about the connections between ecology, farming, and the urban environment; and to develop the tools for self-reliance.
OPPC is partnering with Oakland’s City Slicker Farms (CSF) to support a local food production system. UCOP volunteers will help prepare CSF for its October Harvest Festival that will showcase CSF at its new site. We’ll install drip irrigation systems, create plant beds, turn soil, plant, mix in fertilizer, decorate for the festival and more. Participants will enjoy a guided tour of the facility and learn about this valuable Oakland community resource.
Date: Thursday, Oct. 20
Time: 12 to 4 p.m.
Location: City Slicker Farms @ 2847 Peralta St., Oakland
If you’re interested in this four-hour volunteer opportunity, please contact OPPC Chair Kay Francesca Coelho.
Thank you to the OP Professional Community (OPPC) affinity group for organizing these volunteer opportunities for OP staff!
You are so welcome!! 🙂
