Jesse Bernal named interim diversity coordinator
I am delighted to announce that Jesse M. Bernal will be joining my Immediate Office staff on June 7, 2010. Jesse will spend a year as interim Diversity Coordinator, charged with managing the multiple diversity efforts underway, coordinating with the campuses, and staffing the new President’s Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion.
Jesse is uniquely qualified for this work. He served as a student Regent, and is also a graduate student at the Gevirtz School of Education at UCSB working on his PhD in Education with an emphasis in Cultural Perspectives including underrepresented students in higher education.
As a special programs manager in the UCSB summer sessions office, Jesse coordinated academic arrangements for the Early Start Program, a high school outreach program, and the Freshman Summer Start Program, a bridge program for incoming UCSB first-year students. Most recently, Jesse has been at UC Merced, responsible for creating and coordinating the new Equal Opportunity Program (EOP) office, called the Fiat Lux Scholars Program. The Fiat Lux Scholars Program at UC Merced is aimed to help ease student expenses for course textbooks, and also, to enhance student academic performance, drive and ambition, and overall college experience. Fiat Lux is funded through an award from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE).
