UCOP recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month with brown bags, Denim Day

April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. During this time, advocates work to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities around the nation about how to prevent sexual assault. UCOP will join the national effort to raise awareness about sexual violence by holding four brown bag talks and observing Denim Day, as follows:
Brown bags: Responsible Employee Role
At these two brown bags, UCOP’s Affirmative Action/Title IX Officer Katya Nottie will give an overview of the “responsible employee role” under UC’s sexual violence and sexual harassment policy.

Brown bags: Supporting Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse/Violence
At these two brown bags, leaders of the non-profit organization 1in6 will talk about the work that this organization does to help men who have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences live healthier, happier lives.

National Denim Day: Wednesday, April 26
All UCOP staff is invited to wear denim on this day. The national Denim Day movement was triggered by a 1990s ruling in which the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt the victim’s jeans were tight and concluded she must have helped her rapist remove them, thereby implying consent. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against misconceptions around sexual assault. Learn more about this awareness event here.
