The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, falls on Saturday, Oct. 7 this year. It is one of the oldest and most important holidays in China. Going back at least five thousand years, it started out as a celebration of the fall harvest but has taken on rich symbolic meanings in Chinese culture. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, the moon is believed to be the roundest and brightest, thus suggesting perfection and happiness. To this day, Chinese people everywhere celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with a family reunion to enjoy mooncakes and appreciate the brilliance of the moon.
