WEDNESDAY: APISA’s annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival potluck

All UCOP staff is invited to attend APISA’s annual potluck celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival!
Special guest UC Davis Distinguished Professor and Confucius Institute Executive Director Michelle Yeh will discuss the origin of the Moon Festival, the cultural significance of the moon as it appears in Chinese mythology and poetry, and traditional celebrations associated with the festival.
There will be mooncake and tea tastings provided by the UC Davis Confucius Institute. Please bring a potluck dish of your choice to share, along with the appropriate serving utensil(s). APISA will supply plates, forks and beverages.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, falls on Saturday, Oct. 7 this year. It is one of the oldest and most important holidays in China. Going back at least 5,000 years, it started out as a celebration of the fall harvest but has taken on rich symbolic meanings in Chinese culture. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, the moon is believed to be the roundest and brightest, thus suggesting perfection and happiness. To this day, Chinese people everywhere celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with a family reunion to enjoy mooncakes and appreciate the brilliance of the moon.
