Following an international search, Tim Sullivan has been named the new executive director of UC Press. He will begin work at UC Press offices in Oakland this February.

Sullivan has been the editorial director of Harvard Business Review (HBR) Press since October 2011, after serving as its executive editor for about a year. He was a senior editor for HBR magazine and a member of the senior management team for the HBR Group. Over the last six years, he has worked with his team to transform HBR Press, re-focusing its publishing program, expanding the reach of its authors’ ideas, and improving its financial results.

Sullivan will report to Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Programs Susan Carlson, who said, “Tim’s ability to work with current and prospective authors to advance the global recognition of their works is especially anticipated and welcomed.”

UC Press plays a major role in UC’s preeminence as a public research university across its 10 campuses, and is known nationally and internationally for progressive, groundbreaking publications and award-winning authors. Rather than resting on its prestigious 125-year history, the press continues to innovate in response to changes in the publishing sphere.

Prior to HBR, Sullivan worked at Princeton University Press, Penguin and Basic Books. He has also co-authored two books, “The Org: Understanding the Underlying Logic of Your Office” (Twelve, 2013; paperback, Princeton University Press, 2015), and “The Inner Lives of Markets: How People Shape Them – and How They Shape Us” (Public Affairs, 2016). He graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in history and a minor in music, followed by an MA and additional graduate work in history from the University of Hawaii.
