Wednesday: Wear denim as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month
UCOP staff members are invited to wear denim on Wednesday, April 25 for National Denim Day as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The Denim Day movement was triggered by a 1990s ruling in which the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction. The justices felt that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against misconceptions around sexual assault. UCOP community members can make a statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day.
