Step up to serve: Apply to be the next staff advisor to UC Regents
Staff across the UC system are once again invited to apply for the position of staff advisor to the Regents, a unique opportunity to provide a staff perspective on issues faced by the board.
The application period is now open through April 1, for a two-year term that runs from July 2019 to June 2021. The position is open to both non-represented and represented staff, or non-Senate academic employees, who have at least five years of UC service.
Dwaine B. Duckett, vice president of Systemwide Human Resources, encourages all eligible staff members to consider rising to the challenge of this unique role. “Serving as staff advisor to the Regents demands time and commitment, but it’s also an invaluable opportunity to serve UC by bringing the voices of our exceptional staff members to the decision-making process.”

Sherry Main, outgoing staff advisor to the Regents, took on the role after working for its creation years earlier. “The currently serving members of the Board of Regents don’t know a time before a staff advisor was at the table, so I saw it as my responsibility to share the background and history of this position, and why it’s important. I’m a storyteller by nature, and I’m moved by the power of connecting to staff members across the system and helping to tell their stories.”
Staff advisors participate in open sessions and designated committees of the board of Regents, representing their fellow employees in UC Board of Regents deliberations and to decision-makers at the Office of the President. Staff advisors serve as non-voting members of designated Regents’ committees; they attend and participate directly in committee and board meetings throughout their term of service, and visit many of the campuses to solicit input from staff.
Main, who recently left UC Santa Cruz to take on the role of assistant vice chancellor of Public Affairs at UC Irvine, serves as staff advisor alongside Kate Klimow, chief administrative officer and director of External Relations at UC Irvine Applied Innovation. Klimow’s term continues through June 2020. The UC Board of Regents established the staff advisor position in 2007.
