UCOP office lighting demonstration in Oakland

In preparation for our new Oakland office space and in support of UC’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative and Clean Energy Policy, UCOP is testing new LED lighting in 1111 Franklin and 1111 Broadway to improve quality, control and energy efficiency.

For this lighting demonstration, UCOP has partnered with the UC Davis California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC). CLTC conducts consumer preference experiments, market research and laboratory testing in an effort to develop new recommended practices and specifications for lighting products sold in California. The goal of CTLC’s research is to maximize lighting performance in LED products and promote user satisfaction.

Using the responses to the UCOP Office Lighting Satisfaction Survey sent out last year by us, UCOP and CLTC will be installing a variety of retrofit kits and lighting controls in 1111 Franklin and 1111 Broadway.

Where will the lighting demo take place?

  • The 7th floor of 1111 Franklin in 8 private offices, 2 conference rooms, and open office space.
  • The 14th floor of 1111 Broadway in 6 private offices and 2 conference rooms.

When will the lighting demo happen?

The lighting demo is expected to be installed during winter curtailment. All new lighting will be up and running when employees return.

What features are planned?

The 7th floor of 1111 Franklin will have 36 2×4 retrofit kits and lighting controls and 18 linear retrofit kits and lighting controls. The 14th floor of 1111 Broadway will have 24 2×4 retrofit kits and lighting controls. All upgraded lighting in private offices and conference rooms will have occupancy sensing and dimming controls.

What happens next?

After the demo, surveys will be sent out according to employee location. Occupant feedback on the demonstration lighting will help decide what lighting will work best for 1111 Franklin and 1100 Broadway.
