During this week of Cybersecurity Awareness Month events, we’ll highlight how Internet-connected devices have impacted our lives, and will empower you to own your role in cybersecurity by taking steps to reduce your risks.

Our events for today through next Tuesday include the following. All events are listed in Pacific Time.

• FireEye Presents: Cybersecurity and Safety for Families (Oct. 7, 1-2 p.m.): The fully connected digital world has made it a lot easier for the bad guys to attack us in ways we have never had to deal with before. Beyond email, this includes Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, text messages and so many other communications avenues. All families need to understand how criminals are trying to reach them — and how to protect themselves.
• Barrett Lyon Presents: Understanding Security Through Visualization of the Metaphysical (Oct. 8, 2-3 p.m.): When it comes to security practitioners, there are different learners — visual and contextual. Traditionally, users interact with the network architecture in a non-visual way. But for security practitioners that learn by seeing, it becomes difficult to really understand what is happening on their networks. Barrett Lyon and his team are creating interfaces that connect and visualize data in meaningful ways.
• Box Security and Usability Tips (Oct. 9, 9-10 a.m.): Learn how to use Box safely, securely and efficiently. This session features tips and tricks you may not know to help you get the most out of Box, including the latest product announcements around the all-new Box user interface, collections, annotations and file request links to help power your best work and empower your team.
• How “Smart” Are Smartcards? A Hacker Perspective on Those Plastic Cards (Oct. 12, 12-1 p.m.): We all carry smartcards in our wallets. We use them to purchase things (credit cards), gain access to buildings (employee IDs) and identify who we are (passwords). What gives these pieces of plastic so much power? Why do some cards include little metal pads on them, while others just require you to “tap?” Are they really secure? How was my credit card number stolen? Maybe these are questions that you’ve asked yourself regularly or are considering them for the first time right now. Either way, aren’t you curious?
