Lok Siu, Ph.D.
Confronting Anti-Asian Hate and Bias
Feb. 10, 12–1 p.m. (PT)
Professor Lok Siu, Ph.D., cultural anthropologist and associate professor of ethnic studies at UC Berkeley, is an expert in Asian diasporas and transnationalism. She will discuss how economic and capitalist structures can produce racial violence, ways in which the ongoing pandemic has laid bare deep economic and racial disparities that shape the life chances of different racial communities, and the role of cross-racial collaborations in combatting anti-Asian violence and exclusion.

Black Thriving: A UC Irvine Initiative
February 23, 12–1 p.m. (PT)
In celebration of Black History Month, UC Irvine Vice-Chancellor and Professor Doug Haynes, Ph.D., discusses the campus’ Black Thriving Initiative, a whole-university approach that recognizes and responds to anti-Blackness as an existential threat to the mission of the public research university. Vice-Chancellor Haynes will discuss the ways that depriving Black people of their full participation in society and university life can compromise an institution’s capacity to educate, discover, create and heal, and how initiatives like UC Irvine’s leverage the mission of the university and change institutional culture.
About the Confronting Racism speaker series
The Confronting Racism speaker series is a new program of virtual learning opportunities organized and cosponsored by Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) and the Office of Workplace Inclusion and Belonging (OWIB). Inspired by President Drake and the work of the UCOP Anti-Racism Task Force, Confronting Racism brings UC lecturers from a broad array of fields to UCOP to highlight contemporary issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
All UCOP community members are encouraged to attend these events to broaden their perspective, learn how to adopt anti-racist principles in their own lives and engage in meaningful conversations with guest lecturers and colleagues.
