Interim Executive Vice President of University of California Health Talmadge E. King Jr., M.D.

President Drake sent the following message to all UCOP staff on June 30, 2023:

Dear colleagues,

I’m very pleased to let you know that, pending Regents’ approval and effective July 1, 2023, Talmadge E. King Jr., M.D., dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF vice chancellor of medical affairs, will assume the duties of interim executive vice president (EVP) for the UC Health division at the Office of the President. Dr. King will spend 40 percent of his time in the role until a new EVP begins. He will continue to serve in his role at UCSF. The search for a permanent EVP will conclude soon, and I hope to name a new EVP this summer.

We are fortunate to have such a wealth of talent in the health sciences field, and I am pleased that Dr. King will bring his considerable experience to the UC Health division office during this time of change. With deep academic and clinical experience, Dr. King is well positioned to guide the UC Health division office. A physician-scientist, Dr. King has pioneered work in pulmonology research with a bibliography comprising more than 300 publications, and he has co-edited eight books. He began his career at UCSF in 1997 as chief of medical services at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, was promoted to chair of the department of Medicine in 2006 and became dean of the UCSF School of Medicine in 2015.

Dr. King will join our UCOP leadership team, continuing the work of advancing our academic health centers and health professional schools and representing UC Health at Regents meetings and with internal and external stakeholders. I also want to thank Chancellor Hawgood for his support as we welcome Dr. King into this interim leadership role.

Starting July 1, Dr. Carrie Byington will serve as a special advisor to me with a focus on creating a UC health security function and reviewing in detail our response to COVID-19 and making recommendations for overall pandemic preparedness. I look forward to continuing our work together.
