People skills are power skills

If you were asked to list your top skills, you might be tempted to start with your Smartsheet wizardry or knack for formatting PowerPoint slides. But you may be surprised to hear what most employers say are the most relevant skills for employees today: emotional intelligence (EQ), communication, collaboration, leadership and a growth mindset.

With the advent of artificial intelligence, automation and hybrid working, the hard skills that used to set us apart become obsolete faster. Studies have shown that emotional intelligence accounts for 90% of what sets high-performers apart from peers with similar technical skills and knowledge. People skills have become the “it” factor across industries and serve as a launchpad for career growth.

Because these qualities are often regarded as “soft skills” or “intangibles,” there’s a misconception that they’re innate, and therefore can’t be taught. But we know from research that’s just not true. Just like you can intentionally strengthen a muscle through repeated exercise, you can hone your people skills.

At UCOP, we recognize that people skills are power skills, and you’ll find them deeply embedded within our Core Competencies. Whether your STEP goals are focused on Achieving Results, Building Relationships, or Creating the Future, strengthening your power skills will set you up for success.
