Berkeley is collaborating on research on an earthquake warning system, which could give people time to dive for cover and major systems like transit and utilities time to shut down operations.
President Yudof named a 15-member advisory committee to conduct a national search for the next provost, the university's highest-ranking academic officer, to succeed Larry Pitts, who will step down from his post as provost and EVP of academic affairs in spring 2012.

On Dec. 2, UC President Mark Yudof spoke to the California Chamber of Commerce Board in San Francisco regarding misconceptions about the University of California. He titled his talk "A Baker's Dozen Myths about Higher Education."
UC announced on Monday, Dec. 12, that it has finalized a five-year agreement with the Coalition of University Employees on wages, benefits and other issues for more than 12,500 clerical staff.

Dan Dooley and Judy Sakaki are among the 12 administrators, students, faculty, alumni and staff members appointed by President Yudof to serve on the task force to investigate the Nov. 18 pepper spraying incident at UC Davis.

Following the Nov. 28 meeting of the UC Regents, Board Chair Sherry Lansing (third from right) and other regents met informally with student protesters who temporarily shut down the meeting.
At their Nov. 28 meeting, the UC Regents approved an increase in UC Retirement Plan contribution rates for both UC and its employees, up to 12 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, effective July 1, 2013.
