It’s your performance! Get involved in the appraisal process

Did you achieve something in your job this year that you were particularly proud of or excited about? Why not use that as an inspiration to get started on your self-appraisal?

It’s time again for UCOP’s annual performance reviews, due this fall for performance during the period July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013. Performance reviews are required for every employee to provide feedback on the past year’s performance and set goals for the new year. The reviews give every employee a role in their own career development and a chance to boost their job satisfaction.

“To kick off the review process, every employee should do a written self-appraisal as a starting point to discuss the year’s performance,” said John Fox, executive director of UCOP Local Human Resources. “And by the end of the process, every employee should know where she or he stands and have specific guideposts for future success.”

Fox and his team offer a range of resources to make the performance appraisal process as straightforward, consistent and rewarding as possible. These include classroom instruction for both supervisors and employees, standardized forms, answers to frequently asked questions and a summary of quick facts, all of which can be found on the UCOP performance management website.

The best place for employees to start is at the Employee Role in Performance Appraisals course, a two-hour session that gives pointers for collaborating with your supervisor, taking an active role in your evaluation and ensuring that you have a professional development plan for the coming year. Three sessions are scheduled:

  • Wednesday, July 31, 1 to 3 p.m., 5320 Franklin
  • Thursday, Aug. 8, 9 to 11 a.m., 1217 Kaiser
  • Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1 to 3 p.m., 5320 Franklin

Also offered are two workshops that all managers and supervisors are strongly encouraged to take if they have not already done so. The workshops will be particularly useful for new managers and supervisors. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Setting Performance Expectations: Tuesday, Aug. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 5320 Franklin
  • Conducting Performance Appraisals: Tuesday, Aug. 20, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 5320 Franklin

Go to the UCOP Learning Center to sign up for all classroom sessions.

There are two performance appraisal forms, one for supervisors and one for non-supervisory employees, both of which are available on the website. Again this year, evaluations for all employees, including those represented by unions, will be done using the same forms.

Individual departments may establish their own schedule for the review process, as long as all steps are completed in time to meet UCOP’s final deadline of Oct. 30, 2013. That’s when all completed and signed appraisals must be handed in to department HR generalists.

For key dates and deadlines, see the 2012–13 UCOP Performance Management Quick Facts. For specific questions, see the performance management website or contact your HR business partner.
