Anytime/Anywhere Access: Two final brown bags this week

No more being stuck at your desktop computer to do work. Or emailing files to yourself to work on at home. Or feeling stranded on a loaner laptop with no access to your files.

Soon you’ll get to your files and data from just about anywhere — via the network. This summer, ITS is launching the Anytime/Anywhere Access program to give UCOP the power of cloud computing.

The change, which is a result of President Napolitano’s Efficiency Review, will start rolling out for Oakland-based employees in July.

There are two final demonstration sessions this week where you can learn more about the benefits of Anytime/Anywhere Access and why it’s more secure. Find out how you’ll get to your applications, store files, use your home computer, and much more. Both sessions will be held from 12 to 1 p.m.

  • Wednesday, June 18: 12 to 1 p.m., 11326 Franklin
  • Thursday, June 19: 12 to 1 p.m., 512 Kaiser

You’ll use a “private cloud” — dedicated servers in UCOP’s secure data center — to store university data, run applications and do everything else you use your computer for. For example, rather than save data to a desktop or laptop, you’ll save it to servers in the cloud. You’ll launch most applications from the cloud rather than from your hard drive.

You’ll be able to use almost any device for your work, including personal devices, to access data and retrieve files seamlessly. You’ll be more mobile and able to access most UCOP computing resources, all while being assured your activity is secure.

“We’re excited to move UCOP to a modern and flexible computing model,” said Tom Andriola, vice president, ITS and chief information officer. “We think users will appreciate the mobility and the ability to use their own devices. Data security, which is a growing concern for all institutions, will also be improved.”

Andriola said benefits to UCOP include safe storage and backup of university data on secure, central servers in the data center rather than on devices that can get lost or stolen. Software updates and security patches can be rolled out centrally, quickly and easily. The new system will also allow the workforce to be more flexible and mobile, increase productivity and satisfaction and cut costs by reducing computer purchases.

ITS is holding meetings with departments to assess computing needs and develop department-specific migration plans.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to make any of the demonstration dates. What other ways can I learn about UCOP’s cloud computing system?
