Discover the Oakland Museum’s collection of photos and artifacts from California’s early days on Thursday, Oct. 2, during Staff Appreciation Week. Admission will be free of charge when you present your UCOP staff badge.

Staff Appreciation Week isn’t just about being appreciated. It’s also about getting out and about to visit with friends and colleagues and explore our local community.

Continuing a UCOP tradition that began 3 years ago, the Oakland Museum is once again opening its doors free of charge to UCOP staffers on Thursday, Oct. 2, as part of Staff Appreciation Week. Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, the museum is located at 1000 Oak St. near 10th, a short walk from UCOP Oakland offices. All you need to do is bring your OP staff badge to get in. That’s a $15 value.

Its permanent collections include 70,000 works by California artists from the 1800s to the present (including Dorothea Lange’s personal archive of 25,000 negatives and 10,000 prints), California historical artifacts from the Gold Rush and other eras and a gallery of California natural history.

Special exhibits now on view include an installation on San Diego’s annual Comic-Con conference and masterpieces of California landscape by Ansel Adams, David Hockney, Eadweard Muybridge and more. The museum also has a nifty gift shop, open until 5 p.m., and a café, open until 4 p.m.

It was the Oakland Museum where UC President Janet Napolitano officially announced the UC Oakland Partnership, OP’s outreach effort to become a more active member of the local community. So if you’re not already a member or haven’t visited, check it out on Oct. 2. If you drive, garage parking is available for $1 per hour with validation.

Staff Appreciation Week takes place Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 and also includes these events:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 30, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Staff Appreciation Lunch on the Franklin fifth floor patio, featuring tacos with all the fixings, desserts and tabling by UCOP’s affinity groups.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 1, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Come to 5320 Franklin (note that room has been changed from previous announcements) to help fill backpacks with supplies for youth residents of Oakland’s Covenant House, with the goal of filling 25 to 40 backpacks. Contact Paul Lechner at Paul.Lechner@ucop.edu if you’d like to join the effort.
  • Friday, Oct. 3, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.: The popular talent show returns to Kaiser Auditorium, featuring performers from UCOP’s Oakland-based community and the semi-annual Milestone Service Awards as well as a wine and cheese reception.

Look for ongoing updates in Link as we get closer to Staff Appreciation Week!

The Oakland Museum is also having this great exhibit titled Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California. The exhibit includes UC Davis art faculty and students in the 1960s. http://www.museumca.org/exhibit/fertile-ground-art-and-community-california
