New phone system coming to UCOP

As the UCOP phone system nears the end of its life, Information Technology Service (ITS) has taken the opportunity to bring us a state-of-the-art replacement.

The new phone system, based on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, uses the data network rather than the voice network. Among its many new capabilities is the integration of voice mail and email, meaning you can play your voice mail from your email. Full phone functionality will be available from a desktop computer, laptop or smartphone. In fact, many employees may find they no longer need a desk phone.

The replacement of OP’s 1990s-era phone system will be done in stages over the next several months. Planning for the switch is well under way, and ITS will soon begin meeting with department representatives to begin to align current individual phone services with the capabilities of the new system. Installation will be done one building at a time, beginning with 20th Street this summer and concluding with Franklin by the end of October, with training sessions offered upon each rollout.
