Summer reading: A selection from campus reading lists
Looking for a book to round out your summer reading list? You could take a look at any number of best sellers lists — or you could check out the UC Berkeley Reading List for New Students.
The 2015 list — “Summer Sampler: Selections from First-Year Courses” — is an eclectic assortment, culled from faculty suggestions. The books range from a medieval Icelandic tale to a detective thriller (also set in Iceland), from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Behind the Beautiful Forevers, creative nonfiction about Mumbai from Katherine Boo, to an account of a cholera outbreak in Victoria London. In case nothing on this year’s list appeals to you, the folks at Cal have posted every summer reading list back to 1985 here.
And this year, for the first time, the Division of Social Sciences at UC Santa Cruz, has issued a summer reading list, aimed at sharing books that “offer a taste of the academic life at UCSC.” Here you’ll find tomes on organic gardening and heirloom tomatoes and Deep Dark Down, about the Chilean mine disaster by UCSC alumnus Hector Tobar, among others.
Happy reading!
