Celebrate Black History Month at special UCOP events

In honor of Black History Month, the Black Staff and Faculty Organization (BSFO) has organized an exciting line-up of distinguished speakers, film screenings and other special events. All UCOP staff is invited to attend the events described below.

BSFO Film & Discussion Series: Impacts of Mass Incarceration in the African American Community

Attend a screening of Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-nominated documentary film, “13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment.” The film will be shown in two parts during two lunch hours and be followed by a panel discussion on mass incarceration during a third lunch hour, as follows:

Event: From Slave to Criminal: Panel Discussion on Mass Incarceration

Panelists for the Feb. 15 discussion will include: Brendon Woods, Alameda County public defender; Marisa Lagos, KQED journalist; Karena H. Montag, Insight Prison Project. Moderator: Martin Reynolds, co-executive director, Maynard Institute.

It’s Racial Profiling: Marketing of Menthol and Flavored Tobacco in the Black Community

UCSF Associate Professor of Health Policy Valerie Yerger will provide a historical perspective of the predatory marketing of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products. She will also discuss the work she and her colleagues have been doing to frame the disproportionate burden of tobacco in the black community as a social injustice that calls for a tailored approach to policy making. Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

Tavia Percia & Company Presents – Mamie’s Rebellion: The Death of Emmett Till

Using song, dance and pantomime, Mamie’s Rebellion follows the story of the mother of Emmett Till, Ms. Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley and her brave decision to show the world the barbaric crime inflicted on her 14-year-old son by two white supremacist men. Mamie’s riveting story had a significant impact on the civil rights movement and is a reflection of the current injustices African Americans face.

The African-American Experience on Careers and Leadership at UCOP

Join UCOP leaders for this panel discussion followed by a Q&A. Panel: Vice Provost & Chief Outreach Officer Yvette Gullatt; Vice President, Systemwide Human Resources, Dwaine B. Duckett; General Counsel & Vice President, Office of the General Counsel, Charles Robinson; Vice President, Student Affairs, Robin Holmes-Sullivan.
