UC recognizes a remarkable woman leader
On Tuesday, Feb. 5, UC President Janet Napolitano joined UC Santa Cruz leaders in celebrating former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen for her extraordinary legacy of service.
Yellen was awarded the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Medal – the campus’s highest honor. In his opening remarks, UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal said he’s heard Yellen referred to as a “feminist icon” and “the most powerful woman in the country.”
The evening included a robust conversation between Yellen and Carl Walsh, distinguished professor of economics at UC Santa Cruz. They touched upon an array of contemporary topics affecting economics – from gender diversity to climate change – as well as the enduring value of a UC education.
